Sea by snow-white-kt Sea by snow-white-kt
Okay, first off, please ignore the quality of the picture here. I don't have a scanner available at the moment, so I just took a picture. Hopefully I'll be able to scan it properly tomorrow and change the pic to not be awful looking, dark around the edges and too bright in the middle. It does show you what the picture looks like, though, so I'll put it up for right now.

EDIT: Okay, properly scanned now! ^_^

This is the second picture in my personified global regions series. My sister reminded me that they're called biomes (I had completely forgotten that word from geography). I know that technically Sea is not a biome, for all you social-studies-savvy kids out there, but it's counting in the series. Most of the others I'm gonna do are biomes or landforms. And Biomes is just too cool a word. So instead of calling it my areas/landforms series, I think I'm gonna go with Biomes.

I really like this one. I wasn't sure I could draw water (and I'm not entirely sure I did), but I did better than I thought I would! And I am so happy with the sky I could bust. I ended up spattering the stars on. I really wanted the look of tons of little tiny stars in the night sky, and I didn't know how to do it. Sometimes I take a white out pen to make stars, but it would have been way too big for the look I wanted. So, I watered down some acrylic paint and loaded up an oil brush (they're best, cause they've got thicker, stiffer bristles) and flicked it at the paper with my finger until I had enough stars. I love them. It was exactly what I was going for, so I'm really happy.

The moon came out really well, too (though you can't see it really in this picture- the scan will be better). When I was coloring white over the dark blue around the moon to make it look like it was shining, it got blue on the white, and I just colored that over the moon to make the craters. It looks really cool.

I knew I wanted her to be a mermaid, but I didn't want her to look like the Disney mermaids. I'm really happy with her tail and the little frill at the top of her tail. I think she may have come out a little more like Disney than I wanted, but I like her enough to not really care. Her hand is running through her hair, I hope you can tell that those are fingers. >_<

Let me know how you like her! The next one is already done with the lineart, I'm in the inking process before coloring. She's looking really cool so far. ^_^

This is really pretty - i love the colors you used, and how the moon really looks like it's glowing.
Using paint for the stars is a really good idea

Thank you! The colors were really fun, cause it was practically monochromatic, which is always fun to play with. ^_^ I'm glad you think the moon looks like it's glowing! It's what I was going for, and I can never be sure I got it until I hear it from an outside source!

I was rather proud of the paint stars, myself. ^_~ I'm glad you like them!

Gorgeous! I love the use of colors in this, and the starry sky. The water turned out quite well, but I love the little stylized splashes you've added. Beautiful work on her hair, too.

Thank you so much! It was fun playing with the colors, because it was practically monochromatic, and I haven't done a lot of those.

I'm glad you like the splashes- that was probably my least favorite part of it. If I could go back and do this one again, I'd probably keep the splashes, but change the way I drew them. But it does make me feel better about them that you like them! ^_^

Thanks so much for the fave on this, too! I respect your art so much, it really means a lot getting a fave from you!

Amazing picture. The bold outlines really make the character stand out, and beutiful Lighting. :3 The shine from the moon on the water is beautiful, and the starry sky is gorgeous. The colors of the mermaid and the background really compliment each other.

Thanks! Yeah, I used colored pencils for the sky, which was very tedious work, but overall came out well. I was very happy with the stars and the way they came out, and I think it takes away from the line-y look of colored pencils in the sky. It's hard sometimes to make colored pencils look like blank color rather than looking very line-y, but I was happy with the sky here.

Thanks so much for faving this and Forest! I really appreciate it!

i completely agree! Getting the line-y look out of a sky of colored pencils is really hard. i couldn't tell you used colored pencils! & it was my pleasure to favorite your pictures! they're both fantastic =)

Thank you so much! I was really going for Sea to be very peaceful looking. I'm glad she comes across that way!

I'm not sure how many I'm going to do in the series. I have so many ideas for them, and there are so many to choose from! I know there are three more I specifically want to do, plus the one I've already got the lineart done for. So, it'll be at least 6. So many of the other ones seem cool in my head, though. Totaling the ones I've thought up, though, I've got as many as 11 or 12 I could do. I think I'll just keep going with as many as I can, if people still like them, and if I can keep coming up with designs for them. I'll still do other art in the meantime, but I'm really enjoying finding out all the things I didn't know I could do in this series. I very rarely if ever do backgrounds, and this is helping me to discover I can do them when I want to... ^_^ It's a fun experience!

Eeee, this is wonderful! The sea looks awesome, and I can understand why you're so happy about the sky. The stars are just right, and I think the paint splattering worked much better than a white pen could have. The paint is more random (in size and spacing), and it looks like a real night sky. How you made the moon craters worked well too.

What I really love about this piece is HER. Her facial expression of calm content while running her fingers through her hair... I can imagine her humming a little tune to herself and the sea as she sits in the moonlight. Her hair, body shading, frill at the top of her tail, her shirt - everything makes her character. I like her. ^_^

I can't wait for the others!

Thanks, Ash! I'm so glad you like the spatter. I knew it would give me both the variety and quantity that I wanted, I was just afraid that I would screw it up and it would be painted there and tough to fix, but it came out perfect.

Aw, I'm glad you like her so much! It's usually my intent (or at least, is with these pictures) to have a kind of mid-motion feel to it. I'm glad you can see her humming to herself, that's just the kind of feel I wanted. Not necessarily humming specifically, but that kind of chillin on the rock, letting the waves crash next to her, enjoying being part of her Sea. And I'm so glad you can see all the character work! For these, since they're supposed to be representing a specific area, I'm really trying to put character in them to portray it, and give them each a personality. Forest was elegant, Sea is peaceful, the one I'm working on now is mischievous. ^_^

Thanks so much for the comment, it really means a lot that you like it!

P.S.- Can't wait for you to come visit!! I'm going to go ahead and get people to cover the shifts I have that weekend in preparation! ^____________^ We're going to have so much fun!

Thanks! I love playing around with colors, and it's an interesting challenge when you have a piece like this where it's practically monochromatic. It was definitely fun to figure out which blues I was going to use where and how I was going to use them. I'm so glad you like it!

Thanks! I'm really glad you like it!

As far as the file size, I always like to keep them big when there are lots of details. It makes it easier for me to go back and look at any part of it that people critique, and I know I enjoy when other people's works are bigger so I can see them better. If it's a problem for you (I know sometimes they can take a really long time to load), I can downsize this one and all my future ones a bit.
